The Ultimate Lightsaber Buying Guide

When looking for a lightsaber for their child (or themselves), most people simply run out and buy the first one that they find. Although this method usually involves very little thought, time or research, it’s a terrible way to buy one of these toys. If you really want a high-quality product, then you are going to have to take a few moments of your time and do your homework. To help you out towards this endeavor, I’ve created a guide that can be used as a primer to purchasing one of these toys.

Step One: Determine Your Price Range

Lightsabers are available in a number of different price ranges. There are the inexpensive models which are under $10, the color-changing sabers in the $25 to $60 dollar range, and the Force FX models which are anywhere from $125 to over $200+ dollars.

Although both the mid-range color-changing sabers and the Force FX models are decent toys, the budget models should be avoided. That’s because the budget models tend to break easily and that not only makes them a waste of money, but they can also tend to break into plastic pieces that may be quite sharp.

Step Two: Choose Your Lightsaber Color

Yes, not only do lightsabers come in different colors, but each of these colors is actually used by particular characters in both the Star Wars movie universe and the Star Wars expanded universe. For example, a Jedi’s lightsaber is usually blue or green, while a red lightsaber was usually used by Sith and Dark Jedi warriors. Although it’s beyond the scope of this guide to detail every single saber used in both universes, I’ve listed a few basic ones below.

Original Cinematic Universe

  • Green Sabers: These models are often used by Jedi consular and other Jedi officials. Characters who have used this model include Yoda, Luke Skywalker, and Qui-Gon Jinn.
  • Blue Sabers: These models are used by Jedi guardians in enforcing peace in the galaxy. Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker have used these sabers.
  • Red Sabers: These are the blades used by Dark Jedi and Siths. Characters which have used red lightsabers include Darth Maul, Dark Sidious and of course, Darth Vader.
  • Purple Sabers: Purple sabers are often thought of a blend between the evil and the good side of the Force. It’s considered a rare color. Characters who may have used these sabers include Mara Jade Skywalker and Mace Windu.

Star Wars Expanded Universe

  • Yellow Sabers: Yellow models are often used by Jedi Sentinels in their quest to crush those who use the dark side of the Force. Ahsoka Tano is a character who has used this blade in battle. Double-bladed yellow lightsabers are used extensively by Jedi Temple Guards.
  • Orange Sabers: Orange is a color that symbolizes rebirth on Naboo. An orange saber was constructed and wielded by Master Yaddle.
  • White Sabers: This saber was used by Ahsoka Tano and she used two white lightsabers at the Battle of Yavin.
  • Black Sabres: There is only one known black saber in the Star Wars Expanded Universe. Also known as a Dark Saber, it was once owned by Darth Maul during the Clone Wars, but currently, no one knows where it’s located.

Step Three:  Decide Whether You Need Sound Effects

Many of the lightsaber models currently available have sound effect capabilities. It’s important to keep in mind that some of the cheaper ones probably don’t have sound effects, but there are a few that do. On the other hand, there are expensive saber models that usually have sound effects, and there are also ones that don’t. Therefore, it’s important to pay attention to the listing when purchasing a lightsaber.
